HDTV Is Broken—Fix It!
America’s HDTV standard is horrendously complex and will produce confusion instead of high-definition images unless it is fixed. This article describes what is wrong, why it is wrong, and how to fix it. The standard created by the ATSC is really 28 standards that encourage TV stations to transmit low-definition, low-quality signals and make the new television system far too complex. Let’s stop this madness and do it the right way before it is too late.
Electronic Business Cards (vCard)
If you’ve ever beamed a “business card” from your Palm or Visor to someone else’s PDA, you’ve used a vCard. Unfortunately, the standard is not implemented well, and all implementations are missing important features. This sorry state has to be fixed before the next generation of handheld devices and cell phones sets a brain-dead implementation in stone.
Underutilized Technology
I feel another essay in the works. One about all the underutilized technology that the American market seems to ignore. Things like RDS data streams on broadcast radio, the mobile Web (WAP), and all the various computer technologies such as SmartCards that could make our lives easer and safer, but never catch on the way they do in Europe.
