This site will look much better in a browser that supports web standards, but it is accessible to any browser or Internet device. Trust me—you really don’t know what yo’re missing.

Special Characters for the Web

HTML and XML define a very specific character set of supported characters. That does not exclude other characters outside of the defined range, and there are many other characters that are available in the Unicode standard that you may be interested in using. Not all of them will work on every browser, nor will they be available in every font.

The characters I list here include mathematical and scientific symbols, special letter forms, little-known punctuation and more.

Combining Characters

⃝ Combining enclosing circle: This should be a “$” inside a circle: $⃝. And when used with 20DD it should form the “information source” symbol: ℹ⃝
So far, the only combination that supports this is Internet Explorer 5.0 and higher with the CODE2000 font loaded. Even Arial Unicode MS doesn't include the correct characters.
⃞ Combining enclosing square: This should enclose the previous character inside a square, like this: A⃞
⃟ Combining enclosing diamond: This should enclose the previous character inside a diamond, like this: A⃟
⃠ Combining enclosing circle backslash: This should enclose the previous character inside a circle with a slash, as in the internationally-recognized “not allowed” symbol: A⃠
⃢: Combining enclosing screen
⃣ Combining enclosing keycap: This character is designed to create an image of a computer key, used to clarify that one is speaking about the actual key rather than the character. I have yet to find any Web browser, text editor, or other program that will actually display the correct result. Part of the problem is that I have yet to see a Windows font that includes the character. If it works here, you’ll see a keycap here: A⃣
